University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra Concert

After its premiere in April 2017, the Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad de Navarra faces its second professional challenge: a lyric gala proposed by the Columbus Foundation, sharing the stage with soloists of international stature such as María José Montiel, Eduardo Sandoval and Marcelo Puente. 

General admission: 18€ and 16€.

Students: 6€.

A benefit concert in collaboration with the Columbus Foundation in favor of children with cancer and rare diseases. The concert program will take a journey through some of the most illustrious arias and duets of the operatic repertoire and will be presented both at the orchestra's headquarters, the Museo Universidad de Navarra, and at the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastián. This will be the first presentation of the orchestra outside Navarra.

Different teachers have collaborated in the rehearsal process: Juan Luis Gallego and Juan Ignacio Emme on strings, under the coordination of Juan Mira, and André Cebrián and Rodolfo Epelde on wind, under the coordination of Santiago Blanco and José Lozano. All under the artistic direction of Borja Quintas. The San Sebastian concert will also count with the presence of Ramón Tébar as Guest Conductor.

University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra

The Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad de Navarra arises as a new project with the purpose of offering the students of the University the possibility of training and belonging to a quality symphonic ensemble.

Inspired by the orchestras of the most prestigious universities in the United States and Central Europe, it aims to revalue the role of the arts and music in the university environment and to become a young orchestra of reference. On the horizon it also wants to promote links and exchanges with other national and international university institutions through music.

 

 

María José Montiel. Mezzo-soprano

National Music Prize 2015, she was born in Madrid and after training in her hometown she moved to Vienna to further her studies, beginning a career that has led her to debut on the most important stages in the world such as the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Opéra National in Paris, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Scala in Milan, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Teatro de La Maestranza in Seville, the Teatro de La Zarzuela and the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia or the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, among others.

 

 

Ángel Luis Quintana. Cello

He was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria where he began his musical studies with Jaimez Medina and J.A. García. He continued his training in Madrid with E. Correa and obtained the highest qualifications in cello and chamber music.

He has won first prize in various national competitions (Juventudes Musicales, Dirección General de Música y Teatro). He regularly participates in prestigious chamber music cycles with groups such as Plural Ensemble, Zarabanda, and Camerata Sa Nostra, and in international festivals such as Presences 2000 (Paris), A Tempo (Caracas), Dublin, USA, etc.

He has also been solo cello of the RTVE Orchestra and the Reina Sofia Chamber Orchestra, professor at the Conservatory of Guadalajara and Assistant Professor of the Sony Cello Chair directed by Maestro Frans Helmerson at the Reina Sofia School.

He was professor until June 2011 at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón. He is currently solo cello of the Orquesta Nacional de España, professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceu de Barcelona and guest professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory.

He is a member of the Faculty of Music Teachers in Compostela and recently he was a member of the International Jury A. Janigro (Croatia). He plays a J. Guadagnini "Il Soldato" instrument from 1800 on loan from the COLUMBUS FOUNDATION.

 

Borja Quintas. Director

Artistic Director of the JMJ Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón and at the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska in Madrid. He studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow with Professor Vladimir Ponkin and at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid with Professor Joaquín Soriano.

He has been invited to conduct some of the most important ensembles in the world, such as the London Symphony Orchestra or the New Russia Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has worked in the most diverse genres, including an intense operatic activity in Russia, accompanying singers of the stature of María Bayo, María José Montiel or Alexander Vedernikov and a special attention to the music of the XX and XXI centuries, leading the "Studio for New Music Ensemble" in Moscow and with numerous premieres.

In Spain he has done important work with young symphonic ensembles, including the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, the Joven Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, the Orquesta Sinfónica JMJ, and many others. He has also conducted choral groups such as the Orfeón Donostiarra or the Escolanía de El Escorial. In his symphonic programs, he has shared the stage with soloists such as Oxana Yablonskaya, Valery Sokolov, Gustavo Díaz-Jerez, Nikita Borisoglebsky or Alexander Trostiansky.
